Most of us recognise the pattern. You finish your training excited. You start working. You meet situations your course didn’t prepare you for.
The session that stalls. The client you’re not sure you helped. The quiet voice afterwards asking whether you’re actually any good.
So you buy another book, watch another video, take another course, and for a while it feels like progress.
But are you getting better at doing hypnosis?
That happens when knowledge meets experience. You try something, it doesn’t quite work, you see someone else approach it differently, you try again. That’s practice. And practice changes you.
This isn’t a Netflix library for hypnotists. There is a library, but we’d much rather see you in the room.
Don’t practise everything. Practise something.
Twice a month we isolate one ability, such as an induction, utilisation or a difficult moment in a session. You practise it, get feedback, switch and do it again. Small improvements compound.
Look at what the work brings up in you.
Monthly with Carole McMillan, a professional supervisor and JHA graduate. The doubts, the biases, the blind spots, the client who got under your skin. Not case advice: a clearer view of yourself as a practitioner.

Being good isn’t enough if nobody knows you’re there.
Some deliberate practice sessions turn to the business of being a hypnotherapist: getting visible, generating enquiries, handling conversations, following up. Business development is a practice too.

A Year of Practice isn’t designed to become another obligation hanging over you. You don’t need a perfect attendance record, every replay or every resource. In fact, we’d rather you didn’t try.
Use the Academy.
The Academy should serve your practice. Not become another thing you’re behind on.
We’re not anti-training. We run training. But there’s a form of professional development that gets far less attention: getting better at what you already know.
What if, twelve months from now, you were:
You wouldn’t necessarily have another certificate. You’d have something better.
More ability.
We don’t want you asking, “What’s the Jacquin technique for this?” We want you able to sit opposite another person, notice what’s happening, have an idea about what might help and do something useful.
So if your training was different from ours: good. Different schools bring different models, language and assumptions, and that gives us something to explore. We’ll explain how we think and challenge ideas where it helps, and you’re free to do the same. The question is never “Is this the JHA way?” It’s “Is this useful?”
Nobody here is grading you. Everyone in the room is practising, including us.
Don’t learn to do our hypnosis. Get better at doing yours.
It’s for people who have already trained in hypnotherapy, and you don’t have to be JHA trained.
You’re welcome. Different backgrounds make the practice richer.

Freddy began practising hypnotherapy in 1994 and has seen more than 30,000 clients. He is the author of Hypnotherapy: Methods, Techniques and Philosophies.
Anthony has worked professionally with hypnosis since 2001 and has seen more than 7,000 clients. He is the author of Reality is Plastic and Alter Your Experience.
Between us, more than two decades of teaching other people to do this work.
But A Year of Practice isn’t designed around the idea that we’ve finished learning.
We’re practitioners too. We still experiment. We still question things. We still encounter interesting people. We still change our minds.
We still practise.
That’s the kind of professional community we want.
You don’t need another Facebook group full of links. You need people you recognise: people you’ve practised with, who’ll disagree with you intelligently, tell you when you’re overcomplicating something, and want to get better too.
